"Actually, kayang makipagsabayan ng mga players natin galing dito sa Cordillera, lamang lang talaga sa training yung members ng RP team," added Folayang.

CAR lands 11th place in Palaro

By Roderick Osis
DESPITE retaining its title in the girls’ taekwondo event, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) Athletic Association failed to muster enough points and landed a dismal 11th place overall at the close of the 2011 Palarong Pambansa.

The region’s elementary squad mustered only a total of 35.75 points in the elementary level to land number 11 while the secondary team had a total of 31 points for a 12th place finish overall.

With only 66.75 points to brag, Cordillera region finished number 11 in the overall standings, a far cry from the National Capital Region’s 572.66 points to win the overall crown in the annual sports meet held in Dapitan City.

Western Visayas and Region 4-A settled for second and third place overall, respectively, while neighbor Region 1 finished 12th in the overall team standings while Regions 2 and 3 landed 14th and 8th, respectively.

Four gold medals were minted by the elementary boys and girls squads, while the high school team bagged three gold medals paving the way for the region to retain the championship in the tae kwon do competition.

The region’s athletics, archery and swimming squads also came up with big wins after scoring several silver and bronze medals.

If not for the region’s tae kwon do squad, the region would have landed even lower in the team standings.

Winning the gold medal in the sport is Aitana Fias-ilon, who took the gold in the kyorugi group 3 event. Also winning the gold medal is Monsour Carlo Salazar who won the first place in the Kyurogi group 3 action.

Leading the way in the elementary boys is Kirby Dreyfus Bulwayan Jr., who took the gold in the poomsae event before teaming up with Monsour Carlo Salazar and Christian Mark Duntugan for the gold in the team competition.

Angelica Joyce Gaw also won the gold in the poomsae individual event for girls, while her teammates Aitina Fias-ilon and Phoebie Kate de Guzman, together with Gaw, besting the National Capital Region Athletic Association for the gold in the team event.

The secondary boys squad composed of Levin Clark Mina, Keno Anthony Mendoza, and Benjamin Keith Sembrano also bagged the gold medal in the team event competition, while Apriel May Solimen added the onslaught for the gold medal in the poomsae secondary girls.

Tifanny Delizo, Solimen, and Suzzane Glenn Caslangen came up with big performances to win the team events.

Baguio lady pugs falter in Asian Cup

BAGUIO'S pride Alice Kate Aparri dropped her first assignment and bowed out of contention in the first Asian Cup Women's Boxing Tournament at the Haikou gymnasium in Haikou, China over the weekend.

Aparri, the bronze medalist in the World Women's Boxing Championships in Barbados last year, succumb to her mortal rival Mary Kom of India, 8-11, in the event which features the top four ranked women boxers in various divisions in the region.

Kom was also Aparri's tormentor in the last world championship where the Indian mother went on to win the championship in that competition held last year.

The Indian fighter simply outclassed the Baguio lady pug right from the star with a 3-1 lead then withstood Aparri's solid hooks and uppercuts in the succeeding rounds.

Aparri tried to rally in the fourth round but ran out of time and punches to yield the match to the Indian fighter, who also pounded Aparri, 8-1, in their faceoff in Barbados last year.

Nesthy Petecio, the 19 year old promising fighter also failed to bounce back from a sluggish first round performance and trailed all the way before absorbing a 7-10 loss to Kazakhstan's Zhaina Shekerbekova.

Petecio fell behind, 2-0, after the opening round as the 21 year old Kazakh wisely stayed away from the Filipina bet's power shots while connecting with her own head shots to keep a 4-2 edge halfway through the match. (Roderick Osis)

Party list wants Baguio as sports training ground

THE LACK of a world-class sports facility is hampering the City of Baguio in becoming the country’s sports capital.

But even without the facility, Baguio has become a favorite stop for Manny Pacquiao who has trained here in the Summer Capital for his last three fights, while the Philippine national football team, the Azkals, also had a brief stop this year.

Because of its altitude, Pambansang Bayaning Atleta (PBA) Party list Representative Mark Sambar said Baguio could be a good place to build a new sports complex with complete sports facilities.

Sambar, during his recent visit to the city, said they are looking for a new training venue for athletes, which is one of the thrusts of the party list.

The party-list lawmaker said the other sports facilities in the country are now not suitable as training grounds for athletes, while the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, which has always been home to Filipino athletes, is too old and now dilapidated.

“Even its facilities are not complete and it is not a nice place anymore,” he explained.

Sambar said if the city will have a sports complex, this would be a chance for other national and international athletes to host trainings and even sports events.

Sambar though expressed his hesitation on the plan, especially with the problem on the accessibility of the Loakan Airport.

Senator Miguel Zubiri proposed a world-class sports complex to be built in the city to cater to athletes in his visit to the city a few months ago. (Roderick Osis)

Le Tour de Filipinas eyes tougher route

FOLLOWING the success of the Le Tour de Filipinas last April, the killer Baguio-Baguio lap, also known as the "otso-otso" is expected to return in the annual cycling spectacle.

Le Tour chairman Bert Lina said in an earlier interview that although they are pleading for the return of the killer lap, which has been a trademark of the country's premiere bicycle race, the Union Cycliste International has to approve all the route of the race.

But Lina said although the competition is still at its early stage, the group is studying all aspects of the route to make it a tougher race in the near future.

"We hope that when we return next year, the UCI will approve the course that we have suggested," added Lina.

Lina also added the cycling movement in the country is now getting active.

"Having LTdF 2011 as the only Union Cycliste Internationale sanctioned tournament in the Philippines, our goal is to come up with a year-long program to develop cyclists and prepare them for a larger UCI sanctioned competition," Lina blurted.

Le Tour de Filipinas 2011 participants started the competition at the Manila Bay, one of the Philippines' window to the rest of the world.

From Manila, teams sailed with a ferry going to Bataan where a cultural show welcomed the tour.

Second day destination was Zambales, which also features the seas where ships used for logistics purposes pass by. On day three, LTdF reached Pangasinan, a province which prides itself with fresh fish products.

Fourth day brought the cyclists to the high slope of Baguio City where the ultimate test among cyclists unfolded.(Roderick Osis)
