Iranians sweep Le Tour Baguio leg

IT WAS a complete sweep as three Iranians took the 1-2-3 finish at the close of the 2011 Le Tour de Filipinas here in Baguio City.

The Iranians were simply awesome in their uphill battle, as they managed three hours to navigate the 112.5-kilometer fourth leg coming from Lingayen, Pangasinan.

Yellow Jersey Rahim Emami of Azad University came first in the finish line with the time three hours nine minutes and 53 seconds followed by his teammates Farshad Salehiam (3:10:22) and Amir Zargari (3:10:25), second and third, respectively.

Stage One winner Emami, along with his teammate Zargari, claimed Stage 4 was one of their best climbs. “The course was good for us,” says Zargari whose team did not experience any flat tire or delay.

The Iranian trio success was beyond the expectation of many. The four men breakaway team composed of Filipinos Sherwin Carrera (7-Eleven), Mark John Laxer G. Galedo (7-Eleven), Oscar Rendole (Smart), and Joseph Millanes (American Vinyl) thrilled the fans and followers hoped high for their fellow country men.

Their lead during the initial stretch was taken over upon entering the King of the Mountain challenge. The challenge twisted the scenario and gave way for Azad University riders to work to their advantage.

Chairman Bert Lina is happy on the success of Le Tour de Filipinas 2011.

“It is a compact tournament. The Filipinos were able to see how foreign competitors perform and that would be the basis of improving cycling,” he says.

Lina added, “The cycling movement is getting active” after the Le Tour was the only bicycle tour in the country sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale.

Lina said the goal is to come up with a yearlong program to develop cyclists and prepare them for a larger UCI-sanctioned competition.

Baguio squads roar in Smart football

BAGUIO City is fast gaining notoriety in the pitch after dismantling their rivals in the ongoing northern Luzon leg of the Men's Smart National Open Club Championship.

Both the under 19, under 23 and the men’s open squads will be qualifying for the next round which is the All Luzon group stage with the top two teams of each Northern and Southern Luzon groups for a four-team group stage for Luzon.

The top two of this group will represent Luzon in the final 8 for the national championships.

The men’s squad, despite losing to a Phil Younghusband led Rizal, 0-7, will also advance in the Luzon group stage.

Baguio earlier defeated Laguna, 4-0, before drubbing Tarlac, 3-1, then blanked Quezon Province, 9-0, before falling down in their Rizal match.

The under 19 meanwhile downed Laguna, 4-2, and scored a 7-1 victory against Tarlac.

After a five-year hiatus, the Philippines Football Federation (PFF) finally organized the first official league – the Smart National Clubs Championship held in the different parts of the country.

The last nationwide competition was the National Men’s Open Tournament held in Bacolod City five years ago under the presidency of Juan Miguel Romualdez although plans for a similar competition under previous PFF president Jose Mari Martinez – who succeeded Romualdez – did not push through for a variety of reasons.

The top four teams from the Luzon cluster-qualifying round, the top team from each of the Mindanao group clusters, and the top two club teams from NCR, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao winners will advance to the finals which will be played in Manila from June 6 to 25.

The under 23 team will be seeing action on April 28 to 30 at UP Los Baños while the under 19 squad follows next.(Roderick Osis)

Gabutan KOs Thai foe

A SHATTERING upper cut followed by a powerful straight fight ended the 12 round brawl in three as Dayer Gabutan retained his World Boxing Organization’s oriental bantamweight title at the jampacked La Trinidad Municipal Gym.

Gabutan floored Thai challenger Meechai Kiatpracha once in the third round with 1:23 remaining and it was all it took for the 22-year-old boxer from Besao, Mountain Province to shut up his foe in their toe-to toe slugfest.

Kiatpracha is coming off a big loss against another Thai and had his ten fight winning streak broken prior to his bout against Gabutan. Of that ten wins, the Thai defeated eight Filipino boxers in his lair.

“Malakas din po kasi yung mga suntok nya tsaka nasa isisp ko na walong Pinoy na ang tinalo nya sa Thailand kaya inisip ko na ako na ang tatapos sa kanya,” said Gabutan after scoring the victory in front of a jubilating crowd.

Although out boxed in the opening round, Gabutan got his act together in the second round as he outclassed the 28 southpaw fighter from Bangkok, Thailand and landing some shots to the body and the face slowing down the Thai challenger.

When the third round sounded off, Gabutan stuck to their game plan, get some shots off to the body then unleashed some combinations to the head.

With both fighters squaring of toe-to-toe, Gabutan caught Kiatpracha with a powerful uppercut and a straight sending the Thai challenger to his knees.

Kiatpracha tried to get up but the series of blows he received was too much to bare. He had to compose near his corner for a while, stretched both legs and barely stood up before being counted out.

Sensing victory, Gabutan immediately went for the kill as the Thai boxer had little sense left in him and traded back some punches but his corner threw in the towel calling it a night for Kiatpracha.

“Actually nanggigil kasi ako nung first round tsaka hindi ako nakinig sa coach ko kaya ganun pero nung third round, eh nakuha ko na yung timing sa mga suntok ko kaya natamaan ko sya,” added Gabutan who is expected to shoot up his world rankings in the bantamweight division.

This was attested by his trainer-manager Brico Santig, saying they are hoping Gabutan’s ranking will shoot up to number five in the bantamweight division with WBC and WBO champion Filipino Nonito Donaire on top of the list.

He was all praises for his top ward who trained hard and sparred with the best bantamweight boxers in the country today in different parts of the country.

“Yung laban eh nakakagulat kasi magaling din yung thailander but definitely maganda yung nakuha ni Dayer na tyempo,” added Santig.

“Malaking bagay yung inverstment namin sa sparring sa iba’t ibang boxer kaya nahasa yung kanyang speed at power.” (Roderick Osis)

Gabutan, Thai challenger vow early finish

WITH BOTH fighters tipping the scale at 115 lbs, WBO oriental bantamweight champion Dayer Gabutan and Meechai Kiatpracha promised to knock each other out in their 12 round slugfest at the La Trinidad Municipal Gym.

World number 8 Gabutan, who will have his second title defense after successfully defending the crown last December, is set to go all out against the 28 year old native of Bangkok, Thailand today (April 15).

“Kaya natin yung challenger wag lang mag kumpyansa, may tsansa din po tayo na maknock out yung kalaban lalo pag tumama po yung pamatay na suntok ko,” said the 22 year old Gabutan who hails from Besao, Mountain Province.

But his Thai opponent has similar thoughts in mind as Kiatpracha, who owns a record of 11 wins and four knock outs with one loss vows to bring home the belt after their match.

“I worked hard for this, I am already 100 percent in condition and I will knock him down,” said the Thai challenger in their language.

Gabutan has 12 victories, including five knock outs, one loss and two draws in his professional boxing career.

“Ang game plan lang po naming eh kunin namin sa distansya at yung footwork, kelangan di ako pahuhuli sa kanay para maiwasan yung knock out,” added the southpaw Gabutan.

However, Gabutan, said he is not taking Kiatpracha, who has defeated seven Filipino boxers in his professional bout, lightly.

Meechai, ranked as the number two oriental bantamweight contender will eye for his 12th victory over-all, and eighth Filipino victim in his boxing career since turning pro in 2004.

Several undercards will also see action before the main event of the evening against visiting boxers under the Highland Boxing Promotions of Brico Santig with Wilber Andogan facing Jonathan Ricablanca, Roilo Golez battling Danny Mabao, and Elmar Francisco clashing against Brian Diano.

Also in the undercard are John Ray Pasaylo meeting Vic Racuma, Alvin Bais testing the mettle of John Manepranum, Rodel Tejares fighting John Bautista, and Nelson Merilin facing Melchor Bautista.

Folayang still upbeat of Tuck rematch

WITH ALL indications saying Eduard Folayang has fully recovered from his first defeat two years ago, the bemedalled wushu artist and one of the country’s pound for pound mix martial artist is raring to go for a rematch against Jon Tuck.

Folayang has already forgotten the sorry knock out and is ready to face his Saipan tormentor anytime this year.

“I’m really hoping na sana matuloy na rin yung rematch namin kasi gusto ko ring makabawi,” said Folayang.

The 27 year old former high school teacher has been instrumental in Team Lakay’s uprising in the country’s mix martial arts scene when he helped three of his teammates win during a recent bout in the Universal Reality Combat Championship.

One of them, Honorio Banario, won his first lightweight title while the other, Roy Docyogen retained his pinweight belt. Kevin Belingon, meanwhile, copped another superfight title under his belt.

Since his sorry loss in Saipan, his first after five victories in the mix martial arts, Folayang then went on to win four straight bouts, one in retaining his welterweight crown in the URCC against Korean Dong Jae Jung.

Folayang also racked up another three victories in Singapore’s Martial Combat event where he also got a superfight lightweight belt last year against Bao She Ri Gu Leng in a exhilarating five round unanimous decision.

But even without the rematch, Folayang has been stepping inside the gym, for reconditioning as he expects another return at the ring by May or June.

“Under negotiation pa yung Legend Fighting Championship at tsaka yung laban either sa Guam or sa Saipan this year,” added Folayang.

He is also set to defend his welterweight crown later in November in the URCC. Roderick Osis

Bolcio wins WBC Youth Super flyweight belt

NATHAN Bolcio made short work of his Thai opponent in copping the World Boxing Council’s Youth super flyweight intercontinental championship at the jampacked Baguio Convention Center Thursday evening.

Bolcio floored the Thai in the fifth round of their scheduled 10 round match although Pichitchai Twins Gym managed to stand up. But the Kapangan fighter smelled blood, landing a barrage of punches in the body against the Thai as the referee stopped the contest with less than 36 seconds remaining.

The newly crowned champion diminished the height and reach advantage of the Thai fighter right at the start of the opening round, throwing punches which landed on Pichitchai’s week torso resulting to a fall in the first round.

“Yung plano po talaga namin eh sa tyan lahat ng tira kasi nga mas matangkad sya sa akin kaya nung nakita kong bumagsak sa first round eh hindi ko na tinigila,” said Bolcio after winning the biggest fight of his three year old professional career.

Bolcio then followed it up slowly but surely as he landed another one – two combination to the body which sent the Thai boxer to the canvas for the second time in the fight in the third round.

Then in the fifth round, a thundering left by the Kapangan orthodox boxer sent Pichitchai anew to the canvass but was able to beat the mandatory eight count.

Sensing blood, Bolcio poured in several punches, with Pichitchai not throwing even a single punch to counter the onslaught with the referee stepping in to stop the fight in the fifth round at the 2:35 minute mark in the main event.

“Masayang – masaya talaga ako kasi di ko inaasahan na makukuha ko yung corona kasi magaling din yung nakalaban,” added Bolcio in the event sponsored by the City Government of Baguio, Sen. Loren Legarda, Cong. Bernardo Vergara, Mayor Domogan, Cong. Ronald Cosalan and Naris Singwangcha.

Boxing promoter Raffy Panagan, meanwhile, sees a bright future for the righty pug who has been promoting Bolcio since turning pro in 2008.

“Malaki talaga ang pag-asa ng batang yan na makakuha pa nga ibang korona dahil sa kanyang sipag na mag ensayo,” added Panagan who promoted the event dubbed Great Fights at the Heights with Benguet Electric Cooperative, Philippine Amusement and gaming Corporation, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes, Landbank of the Philippines, Thunderbird Resort and Casino, Eurotel and Philippine Veterans Bank also backing the event.

Lionel mark Duran, another protégé of the Raffy Panagan boxing stable escaped Albert Alcoy of Ylagan in a tough 10 round split decision in the co-main event of the evening sanctioned by the games and Amusement Board.

Baguio based fighters Joksan Nimenio settled for draw against Benjie Bartolome while Ralf Lulu, Edwin Cebuhano, Karlo Maguinto, Leo Bacay, and Marvin Somodio finshied off their respective rivals in the undercards of the evening. Roderick Osis

UFC dreams up for Team Lakay

FRESH FROM their recent victory in the Universal Reality Combat Championship, Team Lakay will not sit on its laurels.

In fact, the country’s fearsome mix martial arts team are now negotiating with the world’s top mma promotion firm, the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

“Negotiations are now underway for a possible spot in the UFC,” said Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao.

At least two fighters from Team Lakay are now being considered top join the world’s biggest mix martial arts promotion firm with URCC welterweight champion Eduard Folayang and URCC flyweight champion Kevin Belingon.

Folayang is being eyed to fight in the lightweight division and has been earlier rumored to set foot in the UFC sometime in 2009 but the plan simply fizzled out while Belingon, owner of 9-0 card in the URCC will be up in the bantamweight division.

“Hopefully we could land a deal in the UFC kais matagal na rin nating pangarap na magkaroon ng Igorot fighter sa UFC, ” added Sangiao.

Sangiao meanwhile said several events are being line-up by the group in their effort to promote mix martial arts in the region and at the same time discover talents that would soon be part of the team’s legacy in mix martial arts.

The former wushu national team member said there will be another wushu xanda – mma competition by the end of the month and another grappling competition this May.

“Every other month yung magiging tournament natin para maka develop din tayo ng mga players for future competitions,” Sangiao continued. Roderick Osis

Team Lakay makes its three for three in URCC

BAGUIO’S Team Lakay formally carved its name in the Universal Reality Combat Challenge by winning another weight class in the recently concluded event dubbed Collision during the weekend at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

Roy Docgyogen endured two 10 minuters to retain his pinweight belt while Kevin Belingon came up with a big victory after the six minute mark of the first round to win another super fight belt where the catch weight was at 135.

But the biggest surprise for the night was Honorio Banario who stole the lightweight title against Davao’s Angelito Manguray in the co-main event of the evening via a rear naked choke in the 8-minute mark of the second round scheduled for two rounds.

Banario dictated the tempo of the fight which kept Manguray, previously undefeated after four fights, at bay before catching the 40 year old dentist with a choke forcing the tap out.

“Sobrang unexpected yung nangyari. Magaling din kasi sya yung pinakamatagal kung nakalaban sa ring kasi karamihan puro sa first round lang,” said the 21 year old Banario, a former member of the country’s junior wushu squad.

Banario’s win is the fourth weight class championship belt of Team Lakay.

“Lamang talaga tayo pag dating so conditioning,” added coach Mark Sangiao after their arrival in the summer capital. “Yung first three minutes sumasabay pa yung mga kalaban pero after that parang napapagod na sila.”

Docyogen, meanwhile, retained his belt via a hard fought unanimous decision over Yaw Yan Buhawi’s Alvin Ramirez, their second encounter in three years, where two judges scored the fight 20-18 while one judge saw it at 19-19.

Belingon, meanwhile, made it three for three for Team Lakay after scoring a technical knock-out against Freestyle's Isaac Tuling in their super fight.

A vicious head kick from Belignong sent Tuling to the mat with the flyweight champion pouring on his ground and pound skills against the Davaoeno mix martial artist.

Belingon and Docyogen now hold a record of nine unbeaten record each in the URCC while Banario has a clean 4-0 record in MMA.

Team Lakay’ s Eduard Folayang, meanwhile, thanked the Municipal Government of Kiangan, Arch. Mark Modi Tidang, Arch Lehman Cosalan, Arch Wendel Aplaten, Arch.Besmark Paran, Shape Up Boxing, Tiong San Harrison, Zero Tolerance, 50’s Diner, Dr. Leo Franko, Atty. Wrenolph Panganiban, and Douglas Rufino for their support. Roderick Osis
