ON TRACK or off track, Carlos Anton is simply a class of his own.
After marking his fourth straight over-all championship in the Hill Climb series, Anton of Yokohama-Castrol recently was given the Driver of the Year plum by the Automobile Association of the Philippines.
The restaurateur from the summer capital holds a rare distinction as one of the few racing drivers in the country to receive awards from the AAP in various disciplines of motor racing was honored to receive the “King of the Hill” award for the fourth year in a row.
“It’s a great trophy to share with the city of Baguio where I believe the best drivers should come from given its natural terrain for Hill climb Racing.” Anton said after receiving the award.
Anton used the Mark Young-Hornitex prepared Honda CRX with a 200 horsepower Mohspeed B20 engine and fitted with Yokohama A050 rubber to sweep the series last year. “You can’t win a Championship without a good team and top caliber sponsors behind you.” Anton added.
The 2011 Hillclimb Championship begins June 19 in the Hills of La Union where Anton will try to go for a record 5th title. Anton is backed by Yokohama, Castrol, Hornitex, Autoshack, Home outlet, and Sizzling Plate.
Anton also recently signed – up with Castrol in its long line-up of champion drivers.
Anton sets out to defend his title on May 8 in the Hills of San Fernando, La Union where over 60 racers will tackle the three-kilometer Pias stage. The series then moves further north to the Hills of Batac, Ilocos Norte in June for the second leg.
Anton will continue to use the Mark Young prepared Honda CRX that has brought him his first four titles in hillclimb racing. Joining Anton in the Yokohama-Castrol-Hornitex team is 2010 Division 2 champion Frankie Domingo, 2009 division 3 champion Dennis Aoyong, and Division 4 front runner Alfie Concepcion. (Roderick Osis)
