Benguet to host Nat’l softball open

RIZAL Technological University and the University of Sto. Tomas are set to return to the highlands as they gun for a back to back title in the National Open slated May 9 to 15 in La Trinidad, Benguet.

Organized by the Amateur Softball Association of the Philippine (ASAPHIL), it is the second year for Benguet to host the tournament. Last year the annual event was staged in Baguio City.

Three international teams expressed interest to join the La Trinidad national meet. Club teams from Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei inquired about the possibility of participating in the National Open.

Also expected to join are perennial participants RTU, Zamboanga, Bacolod, Adamson University, Laguna, Rizal, Cebu and Iloilo.

The National Open will also serve as a training ground for members of the PHL Blu Boys and Blu Girls squads to prepare for the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in the province of Palembang, Indonesia.

The PHL Blu Boys and Blu Girls will also participate in the National Open, but will be spread out among the participating teams to balance the playing field.

RTU and UST defeated separate opponents to rule the 2010 Cebuana Lhuillier National Open Softball Championship which was held at the Melvin Jones football grounds last year.

The Blue Thunder scored a 4-2 win over Cavite Province-Philippine Navy All Stars to claim the men’s crown as UST, meanwhile, topped the women’s division by beating the RTU Lady Thunder.

Antoher Philippine Sports Commission (PSC)-organized Philippine National Games set May 23 to 29 in Talisay City, Negros Occidental will also be included in the ASAPHIL calendar. Roderick Osis
