DEFENDING champion Philippine Navy has its hands full when the team tests the mettle of 20 other teams during the Philex Pine Cup 2011 3rd Baguio Open kicking off April 9 at the Melvin Jones football grounds.
The Philippine Navy is set to field two teams in the two day tournament organized by the Baguio United Football Club with giant mining firm Philex Mining Corporation backing the event.
Four brackets with five teams each will see action in the men’s open with the Navy heading the cast in bracket C which includes Tuguegarao Football Club, Baguio Tigers and Candon City Football Club.
Bracket A will be bannered by De La Salle University, also with two teams; Bulacan Agricultural State University; Olongapo and Zambales City Football Club; Dongola, composed mainly of African football players; and Ilocos Youth Football Association.
La Salle team B will head the cast in bracket B together with United Cagayanos Football Association Team B, Baguio United FC, and Sitel United FC.
Bracket D includes Navy B, Saint Louis University, BSU Alumni Football Association, Northwestern University, and United Cagayanos Football Association Team A.
Tournament director Homer Alinsug said competition for the women’s division will also commence on April 9 while the younger age group will see action on April 11 and 12 also at the Melvin Jones football grounds.
”We have been inspired by the visit of the Azkals recently in the country that is why we are supporting the event in our hopes of developing the sports in the city,” said Councilor Elmer Datuin.
Philex hopes to be part of the tournament in the years to come.
