A SHATTERING upper cut followed by a powerful straight fight ended the 12 round brawl in three as Dayer Gabutan retained his World Boxing Organization’s oriental bantamweight title at the jampacked La Trinidad Municipal Gym.
Gabutan floored Thai challenger Meechai Kiatpracha once in the third round with 1:23 remaining and it was all it took for the 22-year-old boxer from Besao, Mountain Province to shut up his foe in their toe-to toe slugfest.
Kiatpracha is coming off a big loss against another Thai and had his ten fight winning streak broken prior to his bout against Gabutan. Of that ten wins, the Thai defeated eight Filipino boxers in his lair.
“Malakas din po kasi yung mga suntok nya tsaka nasa isisp ko na walong Pinoy na ang tinalo nya sa Thailand kaya inisip ko na ako na ang tatapos sa kanya,” said Gabutan after scoring the victory in front of a jubilating crowd.
Although out boxed in the opening round, Gabutan got his act together in the second round as he outclassed the 28 southpaw fighter from Bangkok, Thailand and landing some shots to the body and the face slowing down the Thai challenger.
When the third round sounded off, Gabutan stuck to their game plan, get some shots off to the body then unleashed some combinations to the head.
With both fighters squaring of toe-to-toe, Gabutan caught Kiatpracha with a powerful uppercut and a straight sending the Thai challenger to his knees.
Kiatpracha tried to get up but the series of blows he received was too much to bare. He had to compose near his corner for a while, stretched both legs and barely stood up before being counted out.
Sensing victory, Gabutan immediately went for the kill as the Thai boxer had little sense left in him and traded back some punches but his corner threw in the towel calling it a night for Kiatpracha.
“Actually nanggigil kasi ako nung first round tsaka hindi ako nakinig sa coach ko kaya ganun pero nung third round, eh nakuha ko na yung timing sa mga suntok ko kaya natamaan ko sya,” added Gabutan who is expected to shoot up his world rankings in the bantamweight division.
This was attested by his trainer-manager Brico Santig, saying they are hoping Gabutan’s ranking will shoot up to number five in the bantamweight division with WBC and WBO champion Filipino Nonito Donaire on top of the list.
He was all praises for his top ward who trained hard and sparred with the best bantamweight boxers in the country today in different parts of the country.
“Yung laban eh nakakagulat kasi magaling din yung thailander but definitely maganda yung nakuha ni Dayer na tyempo,” added Santig.
“Malaking bagay yung inverstment namin sa sparring sa iba’t ibang boxer kaya nahasa yung kanyang speed at power.” (Roderick Osis)
